According to Hindu mythology, Priyavrata was the second son of Swayambhuva Manu and his wife Satarupa. He had ten sons, namely:
- Agnidhra
- Agnivahu
- Vapushmana
- Dyutimat
- Medha
- Medhatithi
- Bhavya
- Savana
- Putra
- Jyotishmat
Of these ten sons, three of them, namely Kavi, Mahavira, and Savana, renounced the world and took up the life of a sanyasi. The remaining seven sons were given the seven dvipas (islands) of the world to rule over. Agnidhra was given the rule of Jambudvipa, Vapushmana was given the rule of Shalmalidvipa, Dyutimat was given the rule of Krounchadvipa, Medhatithi was given the rule of Plakṣadvipa, Bhavya was given the rule of Śākadvipa, Savana was given the rule of Pushkaradvipa, and Jyotishmat was given the rule of Kuśadvipa.
Priyavrata was a just and righteous ruler. He was also a great devotee of Vishnu. He is said to have attained moksha (liberation) after his death.
